Welcome to the k. thompson photography blog! I’m Kelsey Thompson, a documentary-style wedding photographer in the Washington, DC metro area. I work and reside in Alexandria, Virginia with my two cute and crazy dogs and my husband (also cute and crazy).

This photography blog will be the best place for you to view images from my recent weddings and portrait sessions. It’s also where I’ll announce new products and share my thoughts about weddings, photography, and the amazing couples that I feel so lucky to work with year-round!

So please check back often and leave a comment when you read (I love comments!). And, as always, please feel free to shoot me an email with any thoughts, comments or questions you might have. Enjoy!

Ready for 2010!

With my first wedding of the year coming up this weekend, I've been thinking more and more about how excited I am for 2010! I'm still editing and designing albums from last year and I can tell you without hesitation that 2009 was such a wonderful year and I'm more than a little sad to see these final albums go out the door. Every time I receive a finished album for one of my clients, it's like opening a present! (And more than once I've needed to order a second copy to keep at the studio just because I am so happy with the finished album!) But the best part about this time of year is getting to look ahead to all the amazing weddings that I'll be photographing in the year to come. I am SO excited for 2010! I can't wait to finally work with the fantastic clients that booked me many many months ago! And I'm so thrilled to be photographing at some spectacular venues! Some are old favorites, while others I'm looking forward to shooting at for the first time. Just in case you're curious and will be visiting the blog throughout this upcoming year, here are a few of the locations that you'll be seeing (and some you'll be seeing even more than once!):

Halcyon House
River Farm
Woodend Sanctuary
National Museum of Women in the Arts
The Omni Shoreham
Brookside Gardens
The Westin Grand
Strathmore
Hotel Monaco
Airlie Center
Chesapeake Bay Beach Club
Admiral Fell Inn
Grandview Manor
The Willard
Key Bridge Marriott
Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR)
The River Plantation
Antrim 1844
A couple of private homes
And one private family farm!

Is it any wonder I'm so excited about 2010?!?! I just know it's going to be a great year filled with many memorable moments, favorite images, and a heck of a lot of fun! We do still have availability for a few dates, so please feel free to contact us if you are having a 2010 wedding. Oh, and because this is a photography blog and I knew I couldn't post without an image, here's a fun one from last fall. The processing is a little different than my usual look, but I'm loving it for a fine-art print! Don't you just adore those yellow shoes?

A new look for the blog!

Things are looking a lot prettier for the k. thompson photography blog! I owe a huge thanks to the fabulous Ellie of Rainy Day Templates, who worked so hard to make this my perfect blog site! We went back and forth about every detail of my custom blog, and she never tired of hearing my ideas, critiques, and overall craziness. So, thanks, Ellie! If anyone is looking to spruce up their blog (photography, or otherwise), you definitely need to check out her fantastic work!

A little fun in the sun

A few weeks ago, I was out in sunny Arizona for a wedding photographers convention. It was a blast! Several of my fellow photographer friends from the area joined me and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves thinking about nothing but photography for five days straight and learning from the very best in the industry. We even found a little time to shoot out in the desert while fleeing from coyotes (another story for another time). Having experienced nothing but rain and cold here in DC for months, my camera found itself almost magnetically drawn to the sun and loving every minute of it!

Just goofing around in our hotel room one night. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to get a bunch of photographers to sit still in front of the camera!

One of the highlights of the trip...a cactus decorated as an American flag. I just had to photograph my ladies in front of it! There were only four sombreros, so you won't find me in this photo either. :)

Happy snow day!

I have been keeping my fingers crossed all winter for some good snow. Not that thin layer of mushy stuff, but some honest to goodness SNOW. The kind we used to get back in Chicago when I was growing up. Snowball-worthy snow. Well, I sure got my wish! The best part was taking our pups out in the backyard for some fun. I don't know what it is about snow, but it makes them absolutely crazy...they love it! They run, they jump, they dig, they lick, they snoof (that's a technical term, of course). Sure there were icicles and mini snowballs stuck to their fur (and my hair) by the time we came back in, but we had a blast!

Our honeymoon in CA

My husband and I were married two weekends ago and have just returned from an amazing honeymoon in Northern California. First, we spent a couple days in San Francisco followed by a drive down to Pebble Beach and then up to spend our last six days in wine country. It was specutacular! We tasted wine from at least eight wineries and ate some of the best food I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. There was even a vineyard kitty who wished us goodbye at our last winery of the trip. And I didn't miss a single shot because my sweet hubby surprised me with a great advanced point-and-shoot camera to take on the trip so I didn't have to carry my heavy camera equipment with me. :)

Walking around D.C.

We went strolling around D.C. today, enjoying the beautiful blue skies and spring weather. Here are some shots I got along the way...

Out and about in Old Town

I just wanted to share some photos that I took when walking around Old Town Alexandria this past week. The buds and flowers are really popping out on the trees. There is still quite a chill in the air, but my mom was visiting and I wanted to take her around the city. Hope you enjoy these images!
