Welcome to the k. thompson photography blog! I’m Kelsey Thompson, a documentary-style wedding photographer in the Washington, DC metro area. I work and reside in Alexandria, Virginia with my two cute and crazy dogs and my husband (also cute and crazy).

This photography blog will be the best place for you to view images from my recent weddings and portrait sessions. It’s also where I’ll announce new products and share my thoughts about weddings, photography, and the amazing couples that I feel so lucky to work with year-round!

So please check back often and leave a comment when you read (I love comments!). And, as always, please feel free to shoot me an email with any thoughts, comments or questions you might have. Enjoy!

Lauren & Bryan - Westwood Country Club, Vienna

Ceremony: Vienna Presbyterian Church
Reception: Westwood Country Club

With the forecast predicting thunderstorms all week (and weekend) long, I know we were all getting worried that Lauren and Bryan's wedding day would be filled with puddles and umbrellas. But it turned out to be an absolutely gorgeous May day! It's a good thing the weather forecasts in the DC area are always wrong! And with plenty of extra time built into their schedule for photos (thanks you two!), I had so much fun taking advantage of the beautiful weather and bright spring day. Both their church and the Westwood Country Club were amazing locations for photographs. Here are some of my favorites from their day...

Gorgeous.

Bryan sent Lauren a rose and a card before the ceremony. I love how she goes about reading his note (and tearing up), while her dutiful bridesmaids never stop getting her ready.

The men's shoes were so much fun, they needed a shot of their own.

Both Lauren and Bryan were fighting back tears as she walked down the aisle toward him.

Their church still has the original historic chapel connected to it. It was too small for the ceremony, but perfect for some photographs!

And a cool train just down the street!

Lauren's sister gave a beautiful and touching toast to her sister and new brother-in-law.

One of my favorite things about weddings are all the fantastic and personal details. Lauren and Bryan displayed photos of their grandparents and parents on each of their wedding days. I love it!

A new look for the blog!

Things are looking a lot prettier for the k. thompson photography blog! I owe a huge thanks to the fabulous Ellie of Rainy Day Templates, who worked so hard to make this my perfect blog site! We went back and forth about every detail of my custom blog, and she never tired of hearing my ideas, critiques, and overall craziness. So, thanks, Ellie! If anyone is looking to spruce up their blog (photography, or otherwise), you definitely need to check out her fantastic work!

Sarah & Nick - Engaged!

I'm always telling couples to just have fun at their engagement session. When you're having fun (even if you feel a little silly at times), it becomes so easy to get great images. These recent images from Sarah and Nick's session in Old Town Alexandria really prove the point. As a matter of fact, there were times I remember thinking that they were actually having TOO much fun! I know, how can anyone have too much fun at an engagement session? Well, you know you're getting there when your photographer can barely shoot because she's laughing so hard! Sarah and Nick are just....well...really fun! Even the intermittent rain couldn't bring down their spirits. I know their wedding this December will be a blast!

Sarah has the most amazing eyes!

Love the shoes...too cute!

Nick has a great sense of humor...I have quite a few images with this type of scene!

A little unexpected dip at the end of the pier...love it!

Mia & Chris - Engagement

Mia and Chris were absolute troopers on this 90 degree day in April. But given how much rain we've been having, it was so wonderful to see the sun! We walked and walked (and walked some more!) around the Capitol seeking out fun locations for their engagement session. I can't wait for their wedding this September! They'll be tying the knot in a beautiful outdoor ceremony in Alexandria.

Love this shot! Mia and Chris are just so relaxed and comfortable together...you can tell how much they cherish and enjoy one another!

The next two shots are at the fountain where Chris proposed to Mia.

We found this cool garage door as we were walking to Mia's house for a costume change. Love it!

Chris turned to me at one point and said that Mia loves America, so we had to get a shot with the Capitol Building in the background. I was more than happy to oblige...it's so nice to hear someone say how much they love their country!

And after a change of outfits (and a large drink of water!), we set out for some more shots around the area.

This cool ad is painted on the wall not far from Mia's house. We almost walked right by it! I'm so glad we didn't though, because these are some of my favorite images from the session. I love old painted brick!

And some spontaneous fun made it even better!
